November 2007 Status Update

It's that time of month again, to review our status on getting out of debt and getting our net worth back to the positive. I did adjust the numbers below to neglect the fact that I accidentally paid the mortgage twice this past month. You can see the numbers below or click on the Net Worth IQ badge to the side for the same info.

So, how'd we do? Let's take a look.

  • Net Worth: Up only $59 for the month. While this seems pretty minimal, it's actually quite good. Considering the bad market caused an unrealized loss of my retirement plan of about $200, we spent $300 on our Wii Christmas present, the $200 kennel bill for vacation came out this month, I paid a total of 7 months of car insurance (normal one and then pre-paid a new 6 month policy) and I was missing 6 days of pay from this past month which could have easily added $1000 to our cash line for the month.
  • Debt Payments: While we paid of 900 of debts, we are trying to concentrate on the credit cards mainly. We paid down those balances $333 with minimum payments only because of the low pay month. Also, $16k of that credit card number is from our central air which is about to be refinanced into the mortgage hopefully this month.

So, definitely not a good month, but considering the circumstances, I'm still quite pleased. Again, these numbers have factored out the extra $1200 mortgage payment we made. Since I won't have one to make in December now, it will balance out with the next month.

Looking ahead, our debts are likely to go up in December causing our net worth to not look quite as good. Part of this is from closing costs to refinance the house and part because we are likely to buy a new car as well. The later will offset with a higher asset balance some, but the home refinance will move a bunch from credit cards to the house, but the couple thousand in closing costs will be a bit of a hit, but I think we shouldn't end up too bad. We will have some dental expenses and personal property taxes to pay yet this month, but Christmas presents are basically done.
